poems about birds

Photo by Eder Pozo PĂ©rez on Unsplash

I looked up --
a flock of birds circled
deep in the sky
below me
the ocean of air holds them and
they hang, listening as
the current whispers, home ... home ...
I would swim
through the clouds
to greet them
arms spread, soaring
down, down
towards the sun.

how do they know
which way to fly?
do they map the
whitecapped breezes,
or merely follow
a compass deep within?
a restlessness that
only wants to go
home, again.

because the way their wings look silhouetted against the clouds has won my heart.

xx,
Olivia

  2. Hi Olivia! I'm Ekaterina. I have been reading your blog posts for a while (or whenever they come into my email), and this is the first time I've commented. I probably should have commented on your blog sooner, but I can be very foolish sometimes. :-)

I thought your poem was so beautiful! I don't know about other people, but for me it describes what I feel when I see birds flying, especially geese when they migrate during the fall/winter.

    1. Ekaterina, I'm THRILLED to read your comment!! So glad you decided to leave a note so we can connect! :)
I've been totally inspired lately by birds ... half of this poem came from me lying on my back while doing yoga outside and playing around with the idea of perspective. If you like poems about birds, definitely look up "wild geese" by Mary Oliver - it's one of my favorite poems and I so admire her skill as a writer!
Again, so happy that you commented! It's lovely to "meet" you! :)

    2. I haven't read any of Mary Oliver's poems before, so I wasn't sure what to expect when I read "wild geese." I really liked it! I loved Mary Oliver writes. I should read more of her poems.

It's nice to meet you too! :D

  4. This is sweet. Sometimes I think about how little responsibility the birds have. Looks like they live so freely!

  7. Wow, this is so emotive...I love how you captured a feeling, a wistfulness, a moment. Just beautiful. I was actually thinking about birds the other day - where do they go, why do they sit on lines together, how do they know to fly and then be still? Favorite part of this was definitely:

    I would swim
    through the clouds
    to greet them
    arms spread, soaring

Such freedom in this poem! Love it. <3

  8. Reading this poem made me want to write poetry again. Not much writing does that to me nowadays.
